Description

During the Civil War, Maine Adjutant General John Hodsdon expected men to serve their country and for the country to serve its men. In 1867, he writes, "To the soldiers "who so nobly volunteered for the defense of their country "language affords but a tame expression "of what is due them. "and I refer to the records of this office "as my best tribute to their worth."
