Description
Carte de Viste of Charles Leroy Whittier taken sometime in 1918 at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Information about the photograph and Whittier's uniform provided by relatives:
"The uniform is an officer's service dress blue in accordance with the USN Uniform Regulations of 1913. The shape of the officer's cap and the service dress jacket changed toward that we know today in 1919. The insignia on the collar is, no doubt, a gold anchor shank vertical (befitting an officer candidate -- an ensign's was a silver fouled anchor shank parallel to the top of the collar. His uniform has no stripes on the sleeves, also consistent with not yet being a commissioned officer."
