Description
Handwritten entries entered into a black leatherbound, commercially printed diary titled: Pocket diary 1863. Cambridgeport, Mass. : published annually by Denton & Wood, MDCCCLXIII (1863). Accompanied by 3 newspaper clippings: poem "The Douglas Panther", " No. 1 Recipe for the Blood, Liver and Nerves", and "No. 2 Recipe for the Blood and Liver" Philander Bonney was a soldier from Wilton, Maine. He describes sailing from New York on January 17,1863, reaching the Mississippi River and New Orleans 10 days later, and making camp. Bonney was in the "horsepital" during most of February and March, rejoining his regiment on April 8. He describes drilling, standing guard, loafing, writing letters home, and being paid $74.10 on May 4th. He sent $50.00 home and on May 6th he bought himself a watch for $6.00. Bonney's last entry is on May 20, 1863.
