Description

Index of the census of the parish of Saint-Bruno (Van Buren, Maine) conducted by Father Pierre Stanislas Vallée (1830-1875) in 1872. This index is organized by occupation. The vast majority of residents lived from agriculture. Some 274 households had a "cultivateur" (a farmer) as their head. The parish also had day laborers, several teachers, two blacksmiths, a merchant, a physician, etc.

It is unclear who compiled this typewritten index; a likely candidate is local historian Guy Dubay, who annotated the census.

The location of the original census, at one time kept at the Saint-Bruno rectory, is currently unknown. The Acadian Archives accessed the photocopies in 2005 and the scanned document reflects the relative quality of those copies, with some annotations being undecipherable. One page (508) is missing from the document in the Archives' possession.
