Description

Photocopy facsimile of the nominal census of the population of the parish of Saint-Bruno (Van Buren, Maine) conducted by its resident priest, Father Pierre Stanislas Vallée (1830-1875) in 1872. As the index of occupations suggests, the census may have been commissioned by Vallée but actually undertaken by P. C. Keegan. The census includes information about the location of the household, the names of its residents, their ages, the number of years of marriage of heads of household, birthplaces, names of parents, occupations, and other remarks. In addition, there are genealogical annotations by Guy F. Dubay of Madawaska.

The parish of Saint-Bruno was erected canonically in 1827. Until 1838, it was a mission of Saint-Basile parish in New Brunswick. In 1870, the jurisdiction of the parish was transferred from the Diocese of Saint John, New Brunswick, to the Diocese of Portland, Maine.

The location of the original document, at one time kept at the Saint-Bruno rectory, is currently unknown. The Acadian Archives accessed the photocopies in 2005 and the scanned document reflects the relative quality of those copies, with some annotations being undecipherable. One page (508) is missing from the document in the Archives' possession.

The census appears here in three separate documents; see the other attachments.
