Description
Report from Dr. Charles E. Swan of Calais to the Secretary of State's office, at the request of Mr. Avery, who was concerned at the report of an outbreak of smallpox resulting in six deaths among the Native Americans encamped on Gordon's Island in Big Lake. Dr. Swan reports that he vaccinated the tribe and left instructions to quarantine the sick and supply the camps "with all necessary food, clothing, and medicine."
