Description
Letter from the Honorable John G. Deane, Esq., [1785-1839] of Ellsworth, Maine, to the Governor and officers of the Penobscot tribe stating that due to the encroaching settlement up the Penobscot River, and the construction of the military road, the State proposes that the townships at the mouth of the Mattawamkeag River be cleared and cultivated, and therefore the "land be sold by the State to cultivators ...the State to be responsible to the Indians for the purchase money and the interest."
