Description
This two-page overview summarizes MaineDOT’s first statewide Active Transportation Plan, developed to assess existing conditions, define goals, and identify implementation strategies for improving active transportation across Maine. The document defines active transportation as human-powered and human-scale travel, including walking, bicycling, wheelchair and mobility-device use, skating, skiing, snowshoeing, and some small-scale electric devices. It presents MaineDOT’s vision for a safe, connected, accessible active transportation system that improves mobility, supports economic development, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and enhances public health and community vitality. The overview also summarizes public outreach efforts, identifies twelve strategies organized under five goals, and includes a case study of Sanford’s Village Partnership Initiative as an example of active transportation planning leading to infrastructure investment.
