Description

This feasibility study, prepared for the Maine Department of Transportation, evaluates potential future uses of the state-owned Calais Branch rail corridor between Calais and Ayers Junction in Pembroke, Maine. The approximately 12-mile corridor passes through Calais, Baring Plantation, Charlotte, and Pembroke, including areas near Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge and Pennamaquan Lake. The study considers three primary alternatives: maintaining and preserving the existing inactive rail corridor for possible future rail service, restoring freight rail service, or developing trail options, including an interim trail on the existing rail bed or a rail-with-trail configuration. It summarizes existing corridor conditions, conceptual cost estimates, environmental and permitting considerations, potential trail use, economic benefits, and community input. The report was intended to inform the Rail Use Advisory Council’s recommendation to the MaineDOT Commissioner regarding future use of the corridor.
