Description
This presentation, prepared for a public meeting on Swan’s Island on October 7, 2015, outlines a conceptual design for a new 154-foot ferry for the Maine State Ferry Service. It describes MaineDOT’s ferry planning efforts, including federal and state funding for design work, the role of Gilbert Associates as naval architect, and the proposed fleet management plan. The presentation explains how the new ferry would initially serve the Lincolnville–Islesboro route during rehabilitation of the Margaret Chase Smith, then be relocated to Bass Harbor to serve Swan’s Island and Frenchboro. It highlights anticipated advantages of the new vessel, including increased capacity, improved maneuverability, compatibility with most Maine State Ferry Service terminals, improved truck clearance, full ADA access, passenger cabins, and outdoor seating. The presentation also includes ferry comparisons, an outboard profile, and general arrangement drawings for the hold, main deck, and upper decks.
