Description
This Maine Department of Transportation brochure explains the purpose and safety benefits of rumble strips on Maine roads. It describes lane departure crashes as a leading highway safety concern in Maine, noting that many serious crashes and fatalities occur when drivers leave their travel lane, either by driving off the road or crossing into oncoming traffic. The brochure explains how edge line, shoulder, and centerline rumble strips use noise and vibration to alert distracted, drowsy, or otherwise impaired drivers, helping them correct course before a crash occurs. It also summarizes Maine’s use of centerline rumble strips on two-lane roads, their selective installation on higher-speed roadways, accommodations for motorcycles, and documented reductions in head-on crashes and fatalities. Community testimonials and safety performance statistics are included.
