Description

This report examines the safety performance of centerline rumble strip corridors on Maine roads, focusing on their effectiveness in reducing lane departure crashes, particularly head-on and went-off-road crashes. Prepared by the Maine Department of Transportation, the report explains the agency’s shift from a reactive approach to a systemic method for identifying high-risk corridors based on roadway priority, traffic volume, speed limit, and crash data. It reviews rumble strip installations completed between 2006 and 2015 and compares crash, fatality, and incapacitating injury rates before and after installation. The findings show substantial reductions in fatalities and measurable reductions in head-on and went-off-road crash rates on treated corridors. The report also outlines MaineDOT’s plans for continued rumble strip installation through 2019 and includes supporting tables of corridor locations, crash histories, and before-and-after safety comparisons.
