Description

This report summarizes a 2015 Maine Department of Transportation inspection of ET-Plus guardrail terminal ends on Maine highways. Following a statewide effort to identify MaineDOT-owned ET-Plus units, 86 randomly selected terminal ends were inspected using a 28-item checklist based on manufacturer documentation and Federal Highway Administration input. The inspection found that 53 units were functional or fully functional, 21 had some deficiencies, and 12 were considered nonfunctional. Common issues included impact damage, disengaged w-beams, improper installation, incorrect hardware, inadequate height, and cable or bearing plate problems. The report recommends expanding detailed inspections to other guardrail terminal types and providing additional training for personnel responsible for guardrail crash-end installation.
