Description
Maine Runner was started by Rick Krause of Pittsfield to provide the state’s long-distance running community with a schedules of races, race results, articles about running, and profiles of Maine runners. Krause previously put out a successful newsletter for the Central Maine Striders running club, and Maine Runner is an extension of the ideas that went into that publication. In addition, Maine Runner filled a gap left by the Maine Amateur Athletic Union, which ended its involvement with road racing and stopped issuing a schedule of road races.
Maine Runner began publication with No. 1, dated March 14, 1978, and was published every three weeks. With No. 14, dated December 13, 1978, the magazine became Maine Running & Nordic Skiing, for business reasons and because of the physiological similarities between running and Nordic skiing. The June 2, 1979, issue featured a volume renumbering, in that No. 21, dated May 12, 1979, was followed by Vol. 2 No. 5, dated June 2, 1979; the first volume of the magazine thus ran from March 1978 (No. 1) through February 14, 1979 (No. 17), and the second volume began with the March 7, 1979, issue. Nos. 18 through 21 can also be considered Vol. 2 Nos. 1–4. Maine Running & Nordic Skiing continued through Vol. 2 No. 7, dated July 16, 1979, after which the name reverted to Maine Runner. The magazine’s last issue appears to have been Vol. 2 No. 12, dated October 29, 1979.
