    Description

    This GIS dataset contains summarized breeding-bird evidence data from Maine's first breeding bird atlas, conducted from 1978 through 1983. The atlas was undertaken to document the status and distribution of breeding bird species throughout Maine. Survey units for the first atlas consisted of 7.5-minute topographic quadrangles, and each polygon in this dataset represents one of those survey units.

    The attribute table contains identifying information for each quadrangle together with breeding-status information for individual bird species. Species fields are identified using four-letter American Ornithologists' Union (AOU) codes. Documented breeding-status values are 1 = possible breeding, 2 = probable breeding, and 3 = confirmed breeding.

    The data were edited during later GIS work to correct identified discrepancies between the printed maps published for the first Maine Bird Atlas and archived digital atlas data. The resulting shapefile provides a spatial representation of the edited Atlas 1 breeding-evidence data.

    Spatial data are provided in NAD 1983 / UTM Zone 19N using meters as the coordinate unit.

    The primary download is a ZIP archive containing the complete shapefile dataset, associated GIS metadata, and a README file describing the package, data structure, breeding-evidence codes, and provenance. Individual shapefile components are also provided separately as supplemental files for users who wish to download specific components.
