    Description

    This shapefile contains summarized winter bird occurrence data from the Maine Bird Atlas, providing block-level information for bird species observed during the winter atlas period. Each polygon represents an atlas survey block, identified by its block code. Individual bird species are represented by four-letter alpha-code fields.

    Species observations are summarized according to two winter survey periods: early winter, December 15 through January 31, and late winter, February 1 through March 15. Numeric values indicate whether a species was detected during either or both periods. The dataset can be used to map winter distribution for individual species, distinguish between early- and late-winter occurrence, and compare winter bird assemblages among atlas blocks across Maine.

    Data fields and coding

    BlockCode: Full atlas block identifier, combining the quadrangle name and block location.

    Species fields: Bird species are represented by four-letter alpha codes. The value recorded for each species indicates the winter survey period or periods in which that species was observed within the block:

    • 0 — Not observed during either winter period
    • 1 — Observed during early winter only, December 15–January 31
    • 2 — Observed during late winter only, February 1–March 15
    • 3 — Observed during both early and late winter periods

    These values indicate the timing of species detections and do not represent abundance or increasing levels of evidence.
