Description
This GIS dataset contains summarized winter bird occurrence data from the winter component of Maine Bird Atlas 2. Winter atlas fieldwork was conducted from 2018 through March 2023 and documented the distribution of birds wintering throughout Maine.
Maine was divided into atlas blocks based on 7.5-minute U.S. Geological Survey topographic quadrangles, with each quadrangle divided into six atlas blocks. Winter atlas blocks along the coast were extended to include offshore areas within approximately three miles of land in order to incorporate important coastal and marine winter bird habitat.
The winter survey season extended from December 14 through March 15 and was divided into two periods: early winter, December 14 through January 31, and late winter, February 1 through March 15. Individual bird species are represented in the attribute table by four-letter alpha-code fields. Species values summarize whether a species was documented within an atlas block during the early winter period, late winter period, both periods, or was not documented.
The dataset can be used to map the statewide distribution of wintering bird species and to examine differences in occurrence between early and late winter.
