Description
The Low Income People’s Voice (aka LIP’s Voice) is a publication put out by the federally funded program Lower Income People Inc. The office was located (at one point) at 155 Brackett St. Portland, ME 04102 (aka The People’s Building). By March 1971 they were located at 181 State St. 2nd FL. The Acting Chair was Earl Ireland, Secretary was Lynn Smith, and Treasurer was Percy Allan. Publication ran from ca. 1970 to 1972.
The purpose of LIP’s Voice was to share information with the general public of Portland with what was going on around the Model Cities program, Portland City Council, State and Federal programs that would be of interest to Low Income residences as well as tips for pinching pennies, classifieds, local events, and write-ins from the public. The articles focused on corruption and illegal activities of locals, landlords, law enforcement, city/state/federal officials, as well as to point out those who are ethical and for the people.
In March of 1971 the paper’s name changed to The People’s Voice.
The neighborhoods that this newspaper circulated around were: The West End, Munjoy Hill, Peaks Island, Bayside, Deering, Danforth St.
