Description
Letter from Robert Shapley to his brother Prince requesting aid. Shapley was a free black sailor who was jailed in Virginia when he was shipwrecked in a storm. His papers proving his free status were lost.
The second letter is a petition to the Maine Legislature from Prince Shapley, requesting assistance in paying for his brother's jail fee of $56 (approximately $1500 today), otherwise Robert would be sold at auction.
