Description

Rockland, ME/Augusta, ME (August 1, 2013) – Maine Governor Paul R. LePage announced today during a press conference at the Rockland Lobster Festival that he has proclaimed August “Maine Lobster Month.”

“What better time or place than the height of summer here at the Maine Lobster Festival to celebrate this iconic symbol of our state’s long and proud coastal heritage,” said Governor LePage. “The Maine lobster industry fuels our coastal economy, providing thousands of jobs and an annual economic benefit to our state in excess of a billion dollars.”

He added, “Just as importantly, it provides the world with the true flavor of Maine. When people think of Maine, they think of Maine lobster.”

The Governor also spoke of his pride, this past March, in announcing that the Maine lobster fishery had been recognized with the prestigious Marine Stewardship Council’s certification as a sustainable, well-managed fishery. “MSC certification will open new global markets for Maine lobster” said the Governor.

Patrick Keliher, Commissioner of the Maine Department of Marine Resources, also addressed the audience at the press conference to thank the Governor for his recent support of a new multi-year marketing bill to promote Maine Lobster around the world.

“Maine’s lobster resource is healthier than ever before,” said Keliher. “The pristine waters of the Gulf of Maine combined with the longstanding, eco-friendly harvesting techniques pioneered by Maine lobstermen have resulted in a resource that is the envy of the world.”

South Thomaston lobsterman and Maine Lobstermen’s Association President David Cousens discussed the harvesting techniques used for generations by Maine lobstermen to conserve and sustain the resource.

Also, in celebration of the Maine Lobster Month, Maine Lobster Chef of the Year Kerry Altiero from Café Miranda presented the Governor with a signature dish created just for him. The Cafe Miranda Lobster a la LePage will be on the menu at Café Miranda all month.

All month long the Maine Lobster Promotion Council will be giving Maine lobster gift certificates to fans on social media, including Facebook and Twitter. For more details, visit www.lobsterfrommaine.com and follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
