Description

This study examined the experiences of laid-off workers from a major shoe manufacturing company in central Maine. The authors used a combination of administrative data from the Bureau of Unemployment Compensation and Bureau of Employment Services One-Stop CareerCenters. These two data sources provided considerable detail about the demographic characteristics, work histories, retraining and employment service interventions, and post-service labor market experiences of these workers. The analysis provided in this report was intended to help workforce planners, economic development officials and community leaders formulate more effective strategies and service intervention to re-position workers and communities impacted by plant closings and large scale workforce reductions.
