Description
Joseph Smith Bill for Services in the Case of Jonathan Barbour, April 21, 1845 details expenses owed by the Cumberland Overseers of the Poor for services in the case of Abigail Johnson vs. Jonathan Barbour. On January 23, 1845, Abigail Johnson, a married woman and Cumberland pauper, swore under oath that Jonathan Barbour, the hired superintendent for the Cumberland town farm, got her with child in June 1844 while living on the town farm. Barbour was quickly apprehended and brought to trial in the weeks that followed.
