Description
Examination and Accusation of Abigail Johnson Against Jonathan Barbour, January 23, 1845 is the signed testimony of Abigail Johnson, a married woman and Cumberland pauper, against Jonathan Barbour, the hired superintendent of the Cumberland town farm. Under oath before Joseph Smith, a Justice of the Peace of Portland, Johnson accuses Barbour of getting her with child in June 1844 while living on the town farm and requests he be held accountable for his actions and the child. Barbour was quickly apprehended and brought to trial in the weeks that followed.
