Description
Built in 1886 by wealthy industrialist Joseph B. Stearns, Norumbega is Camden’s beautiful “castle” located on High Street. Stearns was born into poverty in Weld, Maine in 1831. He studied telegraphy and by 1867 was elected President of the Franklin Telegraph Company. He invented the duplex system, in which two messages could be sent over the telegraph at the same time, which revolutionized communications at that time. He fell in love with Camden and settled there for the rest of his life.
