In 1989, the state legislature created the Maine State Cultural Affairs Council (CAC) as a collaborative body bringing together key cultural institutions, including the Maine Arts Commission, Maine Historic Preservation Commission, Maine State Library, and Maine State Museum. Building on its early success, the Council grew to encompass additional public and nonprofit partners, strengthening coordination among Maine’s cultural organizations. The CAC’s purpose is to foster strong alliances across these institutions and to speak with a unified voice on matters affecting the state’s cultural heritage.
