The men and women of Maine were ready to serve. As it became clear that the United States was going to enter the war, Maine’s people began to enlist. The records held at the Archives show the large increase in enlistments throughout the period of the war. Although these records consist mainly of those who entered service through the Maine National Guard, there are some basic service records of people from Maine who served in any branch of the military. On display in this panel are the many types of records held by the Archives that can be used to document the service of soldiers in the war.
To show how the records can be used together, we have selected the records related to one man, Eldred E. Green of Turner. The roll book, discharge, soldier card, bonus application, and victory medal application all help to illustrate the actions of the men and women of Maine who served.
