George French was an active photographer from getting his first camera in 1903 until just before his death in 1970. The bulk of this collection is from 1918 to the 1950s. Maine State Archives (MSA) holds French's original images, which include glass plates, nitrate film, and acetate film. He also used several types of cameras producing negatives from 8x10 to 3x4 and some smaller.
The collection has been in the possession of MSA since the mid-1980s and is comprised of more then 11,000 negatives. The MSA staff created copy negatives and a print index of the negatives. With age, some of the original negatives are deteriorating and/or no longer stable, leaving the copies the only remaining image. When possible the digital images have been taken from the original.
The Search bar (in the left-hand menu) can be used to find images. Indexed terms include descriptive titles, keywords, names, towns, and dates,. when available. The advanced search feature may also be useful.
The collection is still in the process of being imaged. The galleries will be updated periodically with new images
