Description
On Friday, June 2, 1820, Governor William King addressed the new State's Legislature, assembled in Portland, with the first of Maine's "state of the state" addresses. King who had represented Maine in the General Court of Massachusetts, and was also in the forefront of the Maine's move for separation (serving as the President of the Brunswick Convention of 1816 and the Constitutional Convention of 1819) fittingly became the 1st Governor of Maine, the 23rd State of the Union.
