Description
William King, born in Scarborough in 1768 becomes a business man and eventually moves to Bath. For nearly 20 years, King promotes and agitates for Maine to break free of Massachusetts and become its own state. The people of Maine eventually agree. Congress approves and in 1820 Maine becomes a state and William King is elected its first governor.
