Benjamin Bates Is Not A Native Mainer But Beginning In The 1850s He Uses The Androscoggin River And Good Business Sense To Build One Of The Most Successful Textile Mills In The Entire Country . He Employs Thousands Of Men And Women To Weave Blankets, Bedspreads, Sheets And Clothing And He Supports A Local Seminary .That Becomes Bates College. His Mill Drives The Lewiston Economy For More Than 100 Years.
