The Aroostook War

Governor John Fairfield, in February 1839, asks U.S. President Martin Van Buren for federal troops to define and defend Maine's northern border. Van Buren sends General Winfield Scott to Maine. The dispute with New Brunswick quiets down and the Aroostook War ends without bloodshed.
