Maine: From District to Statehood

Separation from Massachusetts

Some people in the District of Maine had been pushing for independence from Massachusetts since shortly after the Revolutionary War. Enough people were in favor of this that the Massachusetts legislature allowed a vote in 1792. This vote failed, and it wasn’t until 1819 that a final vote was held, with separation winning this time.
