Description
During the 1881 legislative committee investigation of allegations of mismanagement and abuse of patients, Maine Insane Asylum Superintendent Dr. H. M. Harlow sent a series of questions to 66 hospitals throughout the nation inquiring about the suitability of female physicians. These are the replies returned to him, which were included with the transcript of the committee hearings. Of the 56 replies, 39 were opposed to female physicians, 5 were in favor, and the rest were somewhere in the middle. The results of the inquiry appear on page 9 of the published Report of the Committee of the Legislature of 1881 Concerning the Management of the Maine Insane Hospital
