Abstract
This dissertation introduces poetic atmosphere within the context of phenomenology and built spaces by defining an unexpected atmospheric push through a new concept, Stimmung-Stoß. Throughout the project, I define poetic atmosphere within the lens of poiēsis, adhering it to perceiving a space where a mood or feeling brings forth creativity—not as artistic output alone, but as a renewed way of sensing, thinking, and engaging with the world. The project exemplifies the above theme by exploring the value of aesthetics in phenomenology within the entanglement of interaction between the subject and an “art” example, i.e., the home, the architecture-based art installation, and the museum-cathedral. Through material attentiveness and design techniques, I demonstrate how architects and artists exemplify and complicate the relationship with a built environment and the mood it presents. I further critique how human perception of aesthetic atmospheres is taken for granted. Ultimately, the goal of the dissertation is to disrupt the hegemonic associations related to perceiving implicit atmospheres and argue for the Stimmung-Stoß realized in a poetic atmosphere. Hence, the Stimmung-Stoß—a jolt or shift in attunement—invites an attentiveness to the unexpected. Rather than concluding with resolved meaning alone, this approach seeks to unsettle assumptions and allow for ongoing perceptual shifts.
