On June 20, 1862, the Adjutant General issued General Order #15 stating that all soldiers belonging to Maine regiments that were on furlough or otherwise, and not discharged from the service, were to report to Augusta forthwith. This was followed by a directive from the Governor's Office on July 7, 1862.
In more explicit detail, it reinforced the General Order and requested people in Maine report the presence of such soldiers in their vicinity. The resulting correspondence came from Deputy Sheriffs and town officials whose instructions had been to find specific individuals. Bulk dates of the collection are July - October 1862. It is arranged by county and correspondent.
