Description
A List of Names and Ages of All Persons Residing in the Town of Cumberland Maine on April 1st 1901 Between the Ages of Four and Twenty-One was compiled by Oscar R. Sturdivant, Cumberland Superintendent of Schools. The list is presented by school district, although only the listings for District 1 (Cumberland Foreside) and District 2 (Tuttle Road/Middle Road) clearly identify the district in question. The document was stored in the Town of Cumberland Archives in two separate folders, mainland and islands. The mainland list, which is not numbered like the islands list, had to be reconstructed regarding original order. After District 1 and District 2, the remaining mainland pages were put back in order by comparing the lists of scholars with a similar list compiled in 1895, in which the mainland districts and their resident scholars were identified. Pages 16 through 25 of the 25-page document list the “Names and ages of Island Scholars.” Maine law in 1896 required school districts to supply the State Superintendent of Schools with a list of the students in their schools.
