Maine's Border Treaty

Maine's northern border is finally settled in 1842, with a treaty negotiated by Daniel Webster of the United States, and Alexander Baring, Lord Ashburton for Great Britain. One treaty provision allows an estimated 12,000 runaway slaves to remain free in Canada.
