Description
Letter from Edward A. True to his sister Rosie E. in Hope, Maine on September 21, 1862. Writing from Beaufort, South Carolina, Edward notes that Hope residents Francis Mathews, George Parker, and John Gordon had enlisted and that Hope had voted to pay $120 bounty for enlistment, which angered True.
"It is shameful...why don't they give it to the families of those patriotic men who entered the service, without bounty, when their country first called for men."
