Description

Letter from Sylvester Baker writing to his sister Helen from the field at Petersburg, Virginia. He writes of the wound received by Joshua Chamberlain on June 18 at the Battle of Petersburg.

"Our Col was wounded on the 18th of June he fel liding [leading] the 1st Brigade on charge. He was a brave and good man as ever lived. I see in the papers that he is promoted to Brigider [sic] Gen'l."
