Description

I know it is hard to believe but once upon a time many main streets around Maine were not paved. Also rail road crossing signals and gates were operated by hand by a crossing tender. What seems to be an unremarkable post card photo contains the Maine Central RR crossing across Main Street in this Maine Town on the Dover-Foxcroft Branch. At the left is the crossing gate and RAILROAD CROSSING sign. Somewhere just outside the frame is a small building with a coal stove that the Crossing Tender resided within between the infrequent trains on this branch line. As I recall most of these buildings were gone ca.2015 and the branch line is now a rail trail. The MEC freight and passenger station were to the right. /DL
