William Thomas Hawkens, Sr. was born May 1, 1895, in Hallowell, Maine and was a granite cutter of North Jay, Maine before he began his service.

He enlisted on June 5, 1917, and served the U. S. Army during World War I. He fought and received the WWI Victory Medal.

Upon returning from the "Great War," he went back to work as a granite cutter. William died January 13, 1961, in Wilton, Maine and is remembered here by his grandson, a Maine resident.
