Description
Each school administrative unit in Maine is required to adopt a concussion management policy beginning Jan. 1, 2013.
The policy was developed by the Maine DOE Concussion Work Group, which includes members from the fields of health care, athletics, school nursing, physical therapy and neuropsychology. Various associations, including Maine Principal's Association, Maine School Management, Maine Concussion Management Initiative and the Brain Injury Network of Maine, were also involved.
Maine statute directed the committee to develop this model policy based on the current research and best practice guidelines from the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other states' concussion management documents.
The implementation of the policy will take place between Jan. 1, 2013, and June 30, 2014. The Maine DOE will provide concussion resources for parents and students as well as materials for SAUs to conduct concussion awareness training for staff.
