1st Battalion, Sharpshooters

 

The First Battalion of Maine sharpshooters was organized at Augusta from October 27 to December 29, 1864. Companies "A" and "B" left Maine for City Point, Virginia on November 12, 1864 where they served until January 1865. Company "C" organized on November 29, 1864, moved to Galloupe's Island in Boston Harbor then to City Point, Virginia. Company "D" organized December 2. Company "E" organized November 28, and Company "F" organized on December 29, 1864. From City Point all were ordered to the Petersburg front and attached to 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 5th Army Corps, Army of the Potomac from January to June 1865. The regiment lost 19 men during service - 7 killed in battle and 12 to disease.

They served in the following engagements in 1865:

  • Petersburg, VA - January 5 to April 2
  • Hatcher's Run, VA - February 5-7
  • Petersburg, VA -March 25
  • Appomattox Campaign, VA - March 28-April 9
  • White Oak Road, VA - March 29
  • Quaker Road, VA - March 30
  • Boydton Road, VA - March 30-31
  • Five Forks, VA - April 1
  • Amelia Courthouse, VA - April 5
  • High Bridge, VA, April 6
  • Transferred to 20th Maine Infantry June 21, 1865.
