Description

Maine law in 1896 required school districts to supply the State Superintendent of Schools with a list of the students in their schools. The 1896 List of Students in Cumberland Schools, compiled on August 27, 1896, was found at Greely High School more than one hundred years after it was created. A copy was given to Prince Memorial Library in Cumberland, where it was put into digital format. The list as originally compiled separated the town’s young scholars into two categories, Mainland and Islands.
