Abstract

The Greely Annual 1896-7 is the yearbook for Greely Institute for the years 1896 and 1897. Greely Institute, in Cumberland, Maine, was established through the generosity of Eliphalet and Elizabeth Greely. Eliphalet Greely (1784-1858) was a sea captain, businessman, bank president, state bank commissioner, member of the Maine Legislature and mayor of Portland. His will left $27,500 to the Town of Cumberland, with $6,000 for construction of Greely Institute, which opened Sept. 28, 1868. The Corporation of the Trustees of Greely Institute was dissolved in July 1953 after a Town Meeting vote to establish a free high school. Greely Institute is now known as Greely High School and is part of Maine School Administrative District #51.
